What free programs could I use to keep notes organized for my Dungeons and Dragons games?

I know that there's an official tool for this sort of thing, but I don't have the money to subscribe for that. I'm looking for something to create maps and characters and the like in order to better organize my campaigns before I start them.

If all you want is something to organize notes, any spreadsheet or word processing software can do that.
For map-making, might try Gimp...especially if you can borrow Dungeon Tiles and scan them in, then stitch them together in patterns to your heart's content.
For character sheets, there are all sorts of sites with printable ones...some even have form-fillable ones that do a lot of the computations for you (I personally use myth-weavers.com.)
(BTW, the previous suggestion of Open RPG probably isn't what you're looking for unless you're talking about an online game...as a tool for a traditional tabletop game master, it's of limited help.)

ROFLCOPTERS! Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy styled table top game that has started the tradition of role playing games for decades to come. Yeah it's got demons and stuff in it but it's all made up. Fable has creatures too similar to the ones just like in Dungeons and Dragons such as orcs or trolls and you gotta go around slaying evil creatures to advance and follow a storyline just as any other rpg game. The book Catcher in the Rye could be considered "evil" cause it made a guy kill John Lennon and yet people still read it and not everyone feels the sudden need to go around killing people. Overall, it's just a game to be enjoyed no harm in it.

I've heard of a program called openrpg that can be used to do what you're asking for, and you should be able to get it for free.
