I personally like Peeta better (he was soo sweet!)
I think Peeta did surprise me more, I didn't really expect him to express his secret crush to the whole country, I didn't even think about them getting together until he said that.
I think Suzanne made Katniss the main character because if it centered around Peeta she wouldn't get the great friendship between her and Gale and Katniss and Peeta's relationship would be the main thing in the series. Suzanne didn't want this to be a romance novel, she wanted to get the point across that these kids HAVE to fight till they die, as if it were in Peeta's POV he would only be thinking about Katniss, and guys wouldn't want to read it because it would be a romance.
I do think the character's backgrounds explain the differences in them.

Is this an essay or something?
I personally like Katniss, but that is because I think Peeta is a bit of a sap. You would always know what he would do even if you hadn't read the books. He's pretty obviously an all-around nice guy, which is a little boring to read about. With how Collins wrote Katniss, she isn't your typical protagonist with only redeeming qualities. She is a little socially awkward, and she is more at home in the woods than in high society. I can certainly relate to that. I'm guessing Collins made Katniss the main character to make it a little different. As the protagonist during a rebellion, she doesn't actually participate much in the fighting. She has a different role. Could a male really be the mockingjay? Katniss, though, was perfect for the position. I think Katniss was forced to raise herself after her father died, and that forced her to be more independent, while Peeta was raised in a home with plenty to eat. And that has made all the difference.

I know I will offend many people by saying this, but I hated the actor choice for Peeta. I think Collins made Katniss the main character to create a unique point of view. Most science fiction books are given males from age 16-30 as the main character. Katniss, being a teenage girl, offers something a lot of books do not have. Although Peeta and Katniss are from the same district Peeta had the luck of his family owning a bakery, giving them a source of food. Katniss has a dead father and a depressed mother. She has to provide for her family. That should explain why they have different personalities.

Spoiler Alert I the 1st e book she isn't in love with him and it is a approach to win the video games yet Peeta isn't attentive to this. he's in love along with her. Throught out the books she starts to love him and on the tip of the third e book they're returned residing in the rebuilt district 12 with 2 unamed toddlers
