Question:
Fire Red Jolteon Moveset Question?

Ok so I'm playing Fire Red and recently got a Jolteon, who's got a Docile Nature (I know Timid is better, but still). I'm most likely going to be playing competitively, mostly with my friends though, and I was thinking about different movesets.

- Double Kick
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Pin Missile
(This moveset would cover a lot of types, but isn't all too strategical)

Due to Jolteon's low HP, I then thought about Substitute, which could be really useful. Since Jolteon is the fastest in my team, I think he should maybe have Baton Pass too, since he could be able to baton pass a substitute to another team member. However, then I'd only have two attacks left; Thunderbolt and Shadowball?
-Baton Pass
-Substitute
-Thunderbolt
-Shadowball

Oh and he's pretty much EV trained in Speed and Sp. Attack.
So any suggestions would be really awesome, and an explanation even better! :D

While Pin Missile was a viable move for Jolteon in Generation I due to being one of the only psychic counters, it became quite worthless by Generation III.

Baton passing a substitute is a bit too narrow of a role for Jolteon to play, so you might want to pass on that approach. You absolutely want to take full advantage of that special attack and speed though, so here are a few suggestions.

Thunder Wave- Guaranteed paralysis thrown out fast enough to make anything annoyingly unreliable.

Thunderbolt- Naturally.

Bite- Special in Generation III, this gives you something to hit psychics with again along with a 30% flinch chance to make up for the modest power.

The last question would be the fourth move. Substitute really is a good call for Jolteon to have even if you don't turn it into a baton passing role player, but you may find yourself under too much pressure to make good use of it. Hidden Power Ice is a nice one to have, but you would be relying pretty heavily on having the proper IVs from the start. If you're not interested in the hours upon hours necessary to get that just right, you're really limited to a much narrower move pool. You do have the option of Quick Attack. Given Jolteon's speed and focus on special attack, it would seem futile. However, it would be a potential guard against opponents using priority moves on the verge of KO themselves. Pretty narrow choice so..

Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Bite, Substitute is what I would suggest above anything else.

Friend, I look at your 'question' and I conclude that you are more knowledgeable and passionate about pokemon that I am. It's also pretty awesome to find someone still playing Pokemon Fire Red at this time of the decade. Kudos!

In any case, good job with your Jolteon, although I'm quite doubtful of the Baton Pass. This specific move is especially useful, and may in fact only be used in professional battles, when the pokemon who USED the baton pass has his stats up, because these stats carry on to the next pokemon. For example, a Linoone uses Belly Drum, and then uses a Baton Pass to a Gyarados, that Gyarados instantly has his Attack leveled up by 6 levels. Without any stat increase, Baton Pass functions just the same as switching out your pokemon for a new one manually; Baton Pass, if I remember correctly, doesn't give an extra turn to the pokemon that substituted the last one. It will still take the damage directed to, in your case, Jolteon.

I normally would suggest Last Resort, but that's for the 4th generation. So... if your Jolteon is Female, then Attract would be such a good move. Items are not allowed in multiplayer battles, so there's a high chance that the attract would stay there for a loooong time. If it's male, or if you simply prefer it, Thunder Wave. :D

But, it's just preference, though. Just an opinion from a guy who has long since distanced himself from the world of Pokemon, but is huge fan nevertheless.

Good luck! :D

P.S. I find nothing wrong with Thunderbolt-Shadowball as your only two attacks. Jolteon doesn't last long enough to face 3-4 enemies anyway, and there's not much pokemon who are resistant to both Lightning AND Ghost type moves.

The first set is a no-no, Jolteon doesn't throw physical attacks around well in ANY generation.

The second set is much better, although in the 3rd Gen Shadow Ball is actually a physical attack so replace that with either HP Grass/Ice for coverage or Agility so it can pass on a nice speed boost.

in case you desire your Venusaur to be an attacker, then use this:Swords Dance,Sludge Bomb,Earthquake and Sleep Powder. For Jolteon:Thunderbolt,Hidden means Ice,substitute and Baton bypass. And for Arcanine:Crunch,Extremespeed, hearth Blast and Hidden means Ice.
