While minis can add to the visual experience, they are hardly required. Just about anything will do as long as it is a way to determine size and location of monsters/NPCs/PCs in an unambiguous way: coins, cardboard counters, etc. all will get the job done. One way you can get the visual impact of minis at a fraction of the cost is to print appropriately-sized color images and glue to cardboard counters - you can even print two versions, one with a red-tinged border to signify bloodied status...that way you can just flip the counter over when it goes bloody.

No minis are actually required to play D&D and are completely optional. However, if you would like to use them then you need one to represent each character that is playing and any foes they will face. Which minis you pick out however is up to you and what will be encountered in your campaign. If you can't find the minis that you want or find it is too much of a hassle then you can switch to graph paper and pencil, whiteboard with a wet-erase grid or still using the tiles while using anything you want as a marker from a coin to a little cut-out.

well i have been playing dnd since 2rd edition and to tell u the truth back then we had cardboard tokens that u got with the ten buck starter kit and they were good to play with but u dont need minis but they certainly add to the feeling of dungeons and dragons but they can be expensive for booster packs (around 15 last time i checked) and there is no gaurantee you will get the minis that you want if you can ask your players that they bring their own mini but if you are looking to buy them online GO TO MINATUREMARKET.COM!!!!!!!! they let you pick your minis online and most are around 10 cents each for commons which add to the game. if you can afford these go for the human commoners 25 cents each some goblins and ogres and whatever else you want/can afford to add to the game along with soem dungeon tiles which you can also get from there for around 10 bucks for a pack that has alot of interchangable tiles and look great! but then again if you cant afford that use some graph paper to create your own maps which are great if you can draw. as for tipps on starting new campains go for low level monsters ie goblins giant spiders and rats and a few feral creaters and have a second or if u think they can handle it third level monster as the boss monster, some great ideas i have had great luck with in the past is using goblins that are raiding a town or poisioning there rivers and have the players go to their encampment in some hills ( also a great idea to have some regular forest monsters attack them for good xp ie bears some feral wolfs ect) and have the players kill the goblins and throw in some good booty ie a clock of protection +1 or a few masterwork weapons and a few potions and make sure to have the characters level up at least one or two levels and if you want this adventure to really growthrow in a plot like a letter to a person that has hired the goblins to spread the posion that can lead to a cultist which can then lead to his leader and make a decent campaign that will last until 4th or 5th level or more if you use your imagination that is just one idea there are countless others if you need a premade adventure go to wizards.com and look for dnd stuff and letterboards that you can use if you are in a pinch. as for the real life part put out some mt.dew and other snacks have your area have people use courtesy with phones and have them turned off or on vibrate and take a break every hour to avoid fatigue and dont be a ahole with your dming if a guy is being a prick just tell him its your adventure and if you dont like it he can leave (if he does us a NPC premade from the book) have a preset time for everyone to leave and if you looking to add even more feeling to the game use some music from youtube like pirates of the carabiian music and final fantasy battle thems during your enemy encounters and bar sounds for a tavern stuff like that. Remember just have fun with dming and if you need more tipps on adventures or ideas email me at drow_chapman@hotmail.com i am a avid player and have 3 groups playing under me now and i have TONS of premade adventures that you can use if you need them and even some campaings that i have used that got started at level 1 and ended at lvl 43! i even used to put in campaings at GENCON and was a member of gencon for the last 20 years so hit me up if you need any tips on continuing your adventures or anything at all im glad to just be a help to another dnd player
